“I AM STILL IN THE HABIT OF USING THIS HABIT”

We’ve got our clients thinking about their habits.  In the July edition of The Surroundup, I wrote about Atomic Habits, the huge bestseller by James Clear. And I asked our readers:

**Which new, positive habits did you form in lockdown – that you’re going to take with you into the post-lockdown world??**

We received some fantastic responses.  Here is an excerpt from one:

Hi Gillian,

One habit I learned during Covid was to “turn my thinking around.” I now have a habit I can rely on in my daily life whenever I need it. And I know that if I don’t use the habit on a regular basis, I will start to lose it.

So, what is my new habit and how did it come about? Well, during the second year of the Covid lockdown, I noticed that I was never really happy, and sometimes angry at the smallest things. Not a good feeling.

I am used to Googling anything and everything, so I Googled different things and found “languishing” and the idea of a “gratitude journal.” I kept writing in my gratitude journal for two weeks in end of May and beginning of June 2020. I still have the journal on my phone.

After two weeks of daily journaling, I had learned a new habit that has helped me quickly “turn a switch in my head.”  A big part of it was to recognize and accept the signs in myself and then know I could do something about it.

I am still in the habit of using this habit, and it makes me a happier person. That is “wealth” as important as anything else!!!
